Danielle, 18. I guess you can see if I'm interesting or not.
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
Make at least one or two friends at orientation. Start off by asking what town they are from. Chances are you have mutual friends from people you knew at model congress..
Try to meet as many people as you can the first week of dorming. Get their numbers, add them on facebook, follow them on tumblr, etc. You probably won’t remember half the people you meet but that’s okay.
Don’t get too creeped out if people from your school try to talk to you. They most likely are looking for friends just like you and every other freshman.
Whenever anyone is offering free food at any occasion, take the offer.
Learn to budget your money. You’d be surprised to see how much you spend each week.
Know at least one person who is over 21 or has a fake id so you have a way to get alcohol. You will probably drink more than you’re used to but know your limits. Also don’t be picky..
Decorate your room and wall with fun stuff like pictures, posters, and whatever you want so people think you’re kind of interesting.
Be warned that if you have a whiteboard on your door, people will draw dicks on it.
Set at least 3-5 alarms so you can slowly wake yourself up to get ready to go to class.
Your weight will fluctuate throughout the semester so don’t really worry about it. It’s okay to have bad eating habits.. you’re in college.
Invest in a pair of good headphones to block out sounds. There are A LOT of distractions when you dorm. People will come to your room at all times of the day and night so be sure to make time to actually have time to do most/all of your work.
Know at least one person in each of your classes so you can ask about work and due dates and fun stuff like that.
Be ready to read a lot for school.
When writing a long paper, make sure to make all your periods and commas a size 13 font. It works!
Lecture classes are great because either the professor doesn’t take attendance or you can get someone to sign in for you but make an effort to actually go to class. You’re paying for it.
If you have a kitchen and/or bathroom, make sure you and your roommates clean at least once a week.
Cherish the time you have whenever you have any alone time. There’s no such thing as privacy when you dorm..
You probably won’t be able to stay in close contact with a lot of your friends you knew from high school but it doesn’t hurt to facebook message/have video chats with them. The number of times you see them doesn’t define your friendship.
Try not to get too attached to people. People are very fickle in college.
Don’t take your phone out when you’re in the subway. Harlem isn’t so terrible, but just be aware of your surroundings.
EXPLORE. I haven’t explored much of the city which I really want to do next semester.
Keep a journal of some sort so you can look back on old memories but don’t dwell on the past. Also take pictures, that’s kewl too.
Don’t go home EVERY weekend. Why dorm in the first place then?
Never do laundry on Sundays.
There will be a lot of awkward situations, get used to it.
It’s not what college you go to that defines your college experience but what you make of it.
